PD was established specifically to support the Ghana Federation of the Urban Poor (GHAFUP) to respond to lack of voice, power and legitimacy in the urban development and planning process. PD and the Federation work in partnership to address issues such as land tenure, affordable housing, water and sanitation, energy, youth development and income generating opportunities.
PD and the Federation operate in 8 out of the 10 administrative regions of Ghana namely: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Volta, Northern, Western, Central and Brong Ahafo regions respectively. PD and GHAFUP currently work in 22 cities the largest ones being Accra, Kumasi, Ashaiman, Tema, Tamale, and Takoradi respectively. The membership of the Federation stands at over 18,000 and has about 230 savings groups. These savings groups are spread across 190 communities throughout the country.
